About six months before I started The Equity Equation, I spent time doing some internal work and reflecting on what I wanted to get out of this work. I knew I had experienced some of the isms I was fighting in the corporate space. But I wanted things to be different, to operate on my terms. I knew I needed to be in a community with other like-minded practitioners.
Self-care and my mental and physical health are top priorities and will not be sacrificed for any reason. I started to think about who I was listening to and whose voices spoke to me regarding these topics. One of those voices is Brittany Janay Harris. I had been following Brittany for some time, but then I came across her “Liberated Love Notes,” and I knew she was speaking my language.
One of Brittany’s recent posts is a perfect example of the connection –
God [and our beloved ancestors]
Grant us with the clarity, consciousness and commitment to loving accountability to engage in the work that allows us to fully reimagine how we BE in community with each other.
We know these systems of oppression run deep, and trauma is real … Still, we deserve to unlearn, heal, remember…and as bell hooks calls for us to:
“return to love.”
Grant us the fortitude and “resilience,” that we are often forced to activate in harmful white spaces, to work through THIS work.
A beautiful work that invites us to retire the “master’s tools” for our own divine toys so we can truly reimagine different.
Is it just me, or did you feel a sense of peace and calm when you read that?
That’s exactly how I felt throughout this conversation with Brittany on this episode, where we discuss the journey of internal work, providing space for self-reflection and growth as DEI practitioners and understanding your legacy.
