“Pay attention when people react with anger and hostility to your boundaries. You have found the edge where their respect for you ends”
A friend of mine posted this on IG shortly after my conversation with this week’s guest, Dr. Ayanna Abrams. Since that discussion, I’ve been more intentional with where I draw the line. Mostly, I haven’t had any issues in my current situation. But when I reflect on past work situations, I can pinpoint when people have come to the edge. Nine times out of 10, it was usually when someone wanted me to say or do something counter to my values or beliefs. The aftermath? Pet to Threat.
• “Maybe higher education isn’t for you.” (After not dismissing a Black student from a summer program for a minor offense)
• “You will never be promoted here.” (After speaking up about the mis-leveling and cronyism I was witnessing)
• “You are the reason Black people are not applying to work here!” (After posting a generic article on the experiences of Black women in corporate spaces)
My boundaries haven’t changed. The environments have.
In this discussion with licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Ayanna Abrams, we discuss the importance of setting boundaries for DEI professionals. Listen as she shares five steps to begin the process of preparing yourself and others for newly established boundaries.
